French citizenship through marriage to a French citizen
Our legal team has significant experience in working with French Consulates operating abroad (particularly in the U.S.). Did you know that spouses of French citizens may claim French citizenship through marriage even if the couple has never resided in France? Our team will assess and review your personal circumstances to determine whether you satisfy the requirements to obtain citizenship by marriage.
To be eligible for French citizenship by marriage, you must fulfill the following requirements:
- Being married to a French citizen for at least 4 or 5 years,
- Having declared your marriage abroad to France, if you were married abroad,
- Successfully completing a French language test (B2 level minimum, equivalent to the lower intermediate)
Our team can assess your situation and determine whether you are eligible or not and which documents will be required for your application. Each analysis is personalized and based on your specific situation.
- The process begins with our team providing you with a list of the documents needed from you for us to begin preparing a full application on your behalf. Once your application is fully prepared, we will send you the full draft and review it together with you. It must then be submitted to the competent French Consulate, for those residing abroad.
- The French Consulate conducts an initial review of your application. If Consular offices deem your application complete enough to reach the interview stage, the Consulate will summon you and your spouse to attend a mandatory in-person interview at the Consulate. Our team will help you prepare for this interview.
- Then the French Consulates sends your application to the French Ministry in charge of issuing the final decision. Once they issue a final decision, you will be issued a French birth certificate and then will be able to apply and obtain a French passport.

Our team can assess your situation and determine whether you are eligible or not and which documents will be required for your application. Each analysis is personalized and based on your specific situation.
