Administrative applications for French citizens residing abroad
French citizens residing abroad should maintain regular official ties with French authorities operating via Consulates outside of France. If you are a French citizen residing abroad who has been married outside of France or has had a child outside of France, you should declare these life events to the French government as soon as possible. Our team can handle these applications for you.
Yes! As long as one spouse is a French citizen, you should declare your marriage to France. Our team can assist you with the application to declare your marriage abroad with France. The result of this application is that you will obtain a French marriage certificate and a livret de famille (French family book). These are both necessary documents for many French administrative processes for couples. This step is necessary if your non-French spouse wishes to obtain French citizenship by marriage.
- If your children are minors and were born outside of France, then we can proceed with registering their birth with the competent French consulate. At the end of the process, they will be issued a French birth certificate and will be included in your livret de famille. Therefore, they will be eligible to apply for a French passport.
- If your children are over 18 years old, they will first need to apply for a Certificat de nationalité française (see further information here) before the relevant French jurisdiction. Once they receive a CNF, we can then apply to declare their birth to France.
You must first update your French birth certificate. Once this is done, you can apply for a French passport reflecting your name change. This process also applies for people wishing to update their identification information in France after a gender transition. Our team can assist you with the entire process.
Whether it is for your personal archives or for your citizenship application, Avocat Grégoire can assist by researching French national and diplomatic archives to obtain official documentation of citizenship or naturalization. We can also obtain proof of consular registration as a French citizen residing abroad for you or your ancestors in some cases.
Navigating the process of ordering French vital records can be overwhelming especially if you do not understand French. Our team can assist you with obtaining French vital records by applying to the relevant town halls, archival offices as well as the national vital records database if necessary. For records that are less than 100 years old, we can generally obtain recently-issued certified copies of the record, and for older documents, we can obtain an official stamped copy from local or national archives.
I am a French citizen residing abroad, could you help me with registering with the French Consulate?
Yes, we can assist you with the entire process. Consular registration is essential for accessing various services to complete your French administrative tasks such as obtaining French passports mailed to your home address and voting in French elections. We guide you on the required documentation and on how to complete your application and we handle communication with the consular authorities.
The Avocat Gregoire team has assisted clients in obtaining this document in the context of their applications for Polish citizenship by descent and Italian citizenship by descent. Please have your citizenship attorney contact us if this is a supplemental document request that you receive in the scope of an application for citizenship by descent in a country other than France. In many cases, we can obtain a response from the relevant services and archives confirming your ancestor’s status regarding French citizenship.
